I have been using electronic pest repellents for a long time. I wish more people knew how well they work! I put one in each room (I used to have a lot of roaches, now I have none!) No horrible smelling exterminating fluid. I have recommended them to others and now thry happily use them. Try them and you’ll see what I mean.

People are writing poor reviews for this item saying that it doesn’t work with ants, roaches, or spiders, but this says it’s a MOUSE & RAT product. I didn’t see anywhere where it claims to get rid of bugs. I’ll purchase it because I’m trying to get mice out of my house and the one favorable review says it gets rid of mice (which is what the product claims to do).

Lo and behold, there is something fun about bugs. Fitzhugh makes it so. The writing style is very likeable, giving this mystery-ish novel a light but slightly heart-stirring feel. The characters are well done, in a comical style, and the realistic touches add a little weight to the story.

My only criticism of this book is that I thought it would be laugh-out-loud funny. It IS humorous in the makes-you-smile-on-occasion sort of way, but I don’t think I once laughed out loud. There are plenty of things about this book that are unplausible, as well, but you’ll be fine with that as long as you dive in knowing that.

An entertaining first novel. Would probably read the second one if I happened upon it, but would not go out of my way to look for it.

Pest Control by Bill Fitzhugh is a truly wonderful novel. Fitzhugh takes a classic mystery story set in New York and adds a bunch of weird charachters and plot twists. The book is about an exterminator and his family. The exterminator is appalled by the use of pesticides to kill bugs and is creating his own all natural method using his genetically engineered assasin bugs. He quits his job and sees an ad in the paper offering 50,000 bucks for an extermination job. He sends in a resume and is given the job, unaware that his victim is to be a swiss millionaire. The guy dies anyway, and asassins around the world flock to NY to eliminate their new competitor. Klaus, a soft-hearted crack asassin, befriends him, and the rest of the story is a hilarious chase through the big apple. The book is often found under mystery in bookstores, but it is really a comedy. This book is definetly a read for anyone with a sense of humor!

We purchased two of these units direct from the company, and after a couple of months of use, we have noticed that not only have they not solved our roach problem, but roaches seem to be drawn to them. Any time of the day or night there are roaches on, around, and behind the unit. Frankly, it’s creepy.

We try to keep a clean, sustainable, chemical-free home and don’t want to use poisons around our pets (or ourselves), but honestly, don’t waste your money on this.

In 2003 the FTC required proof of RIDDEX’s claims. From what I have read, the product has since been banned from sale. The ads still run on some cable channels for which they will likely be fined. I imagine they will continue to sell the product until the fines outweigh the profits. Here is the government FTC report:

My personal experience with this type of product has not been good. I purchased a similar product from Home Depot. We got it because we noticed a mouse in our bedroom. We plugged the unit in, and within a week the house was crawling with the rodents! It is as if the thing ATTRACTED mice rather then repelled them! I could hear the device when all was quiet. It made me edgy and I found it difficult to sleep. We didn’t have children at the time and decided to use Decon. Poison was not our ideal solution but it worked. The mice, all of them, were gone inside of a week.

This is a brief but excellent introduction to the topic. Although short, it’s full of hundreds of tips and pieces of information on how to control various pests in your garden. Knowing a little about entomology helps, but isn’t necessary. But a lot of the control comes down to using a weak solution of soap or lime to spray directly on the pests. This doesn’t harm the plants, apparently, but many insect pests are susceptible to it. And there are many other such tips and methods discussed in the book. Some plants, such as marigolds, interestingly, can be planted also to control certain infestations since their roots secret a substance that is toxic to certain pests. Overall an interesing, practical, and informative little guide on the subject.
