I just used this Earthwise mower for the first time today, first cut of the year. I live in the Cleveland, OH area and my yard is 100% Kentucky bluegrass. I live in a new home on your typical new-home-sized lot (read; not large). I don’t recall the exact dimensions, but I believe it’s something like 120′ x 90′ total, including where the house sits.

I bought the mower and an extension cord on a Saturday using Amazon prime and had it shipped overnight. It was on my porch Monday when I got home from work. Nice! However, I see now that it’s price is less than I paid for it just 4 days ago, but whatever. Total price to my door including a 100′ 12ga yellow extension cord was right around 0. Great service from Amazon.

Assembly is cake, just unpack the mower and install the handle. I’m 6’6″ so I installed the handle in the highest position and it’s very comfortable for me. Much better than the old Craftsman gas mower I’m replacing. That’s all there is to the assembly.

Now, on to the actual mowing. It’s been raining here for the last few days, and the grass today was still a bit wet. Very long though between all the rain and a TruGreen treatment, so I figured it would be a good challenge for this mower.

First, let’s talk about the cord. Things like this pull some pretty serious power I would imagine, so I bought a real heavy duty cord. The 12ga is a very thick cord and doesn’t really fit well in the cord retainer hook, but it still works. Just fold the cord in half and stuff it into the retainer and don’t worry about the hooks. It stays put just fine. Now, as far as mowing with the cord, it’s not a big deal as long as you pay attention. Know where it is at all times and you’ll be fine. Quite frankly, if you buy a corded mower and then complain about the cord, well, I can’t help you. Know what it means to have a corded mower: You need to deal with the cord. I’ve never used an electric mower before, and I was mildly concerned about dealing with the cord, but a little thought ahead of time is all it takes. The best way to cut is to start near the outlet and work your way out. Make sure the cord is always laying on parts you’ve already done. Also, using a cord that’s NOT GREEN is a good idea too. Mine is yellow, very easy to spot. If you get tangled or run out of slack, just turn the mower off, get it set, and fire it back up again. It’s as simple as pulling and releasing a handle. Be careful around shrubs and plants; again, just pay attention to where it is at all times.

Really, the only thing I don’t like about dealing with the cord is having to reel it up and unreel it. Mowing with the cord is not a problem. I think I’ll buy another shorter cord and keep one in the back yard and one up front so I don’t have to spool it up and carry it around to the back. If you’re pulling a long length of cord, like towards the back of the yard, just hold the cord between the handle and your hands and it’s no problem to pull it along.

As far as power, it is plenty strong for cutting long, somewhat damp grass. It plowed right through every blade, mulching it all with no issues. It bogged down a tiny bit on really long grass, but so did my gas one. Just go slow. I won’t comment on the side discharge or bagging because I don’t do either. Bagging is pointless and a total hassle. The mulching this mower does is MUCH better than my old Craftsman which left piles of grass all over. Not this one, the grass is buried down in there. It’s not self propelled, but it’s light and has nice wheels with bearings that roll very easily. No problems whatsoever. The height adjustment is awesome too, all four wheels with one spring loaded handle. Very easy.

Overall, I’m 100% satisfied with this mower. It’s powerful, light, VERY quiet compared to gas, clean, no fumes, no maintenance, the list goes on. Just know what it takes to use a corded mower. I’ll never go back to gas.

Replaced my Sears cordless mulching mower (I’m a green kinda guy) as I needed more power and no mulching. Bought this because it’s the newer model (didn’t know what differences there were, but NEWER! I mean, COME ON!).

Our yard is what I like to call California Native (most plants of which of course aren’t native at all but introduced 200-years ago by the Spanish to feed their livestock), but it’s really a big weed patch to most folks. There’s two 8-ft X 30-ft side sections and a 60-ft X 40-ft back yard. It was a horse pasture prior to our house being built so the majority of true grass is rye. Late winter & early spring we get mostly Oxalis sour grass (extremely wet and high content of oxalic acid), the bright yellow flowers that coat the coastal hills, and some California poppies. This always is the toughest mowing season as the oxalis clumps together – I can actually ring out cups of liquid from the clumps (which is why I cannot use a clumping mower)!

Anyway, the rye had gotten to about 6-ft high, so I got our my trusty Troy-Built electric weed-wacker (fantastic product, BTW!!) and knocked down all to about 4-inches (I left as many CA poppies as possible ). BTW: the oxalic acid is “atomized” during weed-wacking and it is a terribly uncomfortable thing to inhale – but I digress: It was time to see how this mower would cut and hopefully bag the “yard”. It did cut but didn’t bag… I had to hand-rake as always Very good aerobic exercise, but not exactly a lot of fun!

PROS:

1: Power! This mower won’t quit. It slowed some, but never so much that cutting was hampered. NOTE: I have a 100-ft 12/3 extension cord that I use with my weed-wacker, and I bought a 50-ft 12/3 for this mower per manufacturer (and other reviewers) recommendation. However, I did not notice any difference in power using either cord, and the 100-ft one is easier to keep out of the way during mowing so I’ll use it in future.

2. Ergonomically designed! The weight and handle and switch and cord are very easy to work with.

3. Easy to adjust wheel height, and the wheels roll easily. This model also has 8-inch rear wheels, even though that isn’t clear in the description.

4. Solid construction.

5. Easy to clean, so far. Just wiped-out the clumps and swept off the cuttings.

CONS:

1. Even on the dry grass, the bag doesn’t work. I don’t know why, but it just doesn’t. I’ll come back to this when it’s further into the spring/summer and my “grass” is really dry.

2. The side discharge doesn’t work either! Seriously, dry or wet, the cuttings just drop out of the bottom!!! Which may also be the bagging problem.

3. Cuttings gather in the space for the bag. There’s a flap that covers the bag hole when not using the bag… the hole has depth, it’s not just a hole through the 1/8″ body, and it fills with cuttings.

4. The cord holder is too small for a 12/3 cable, at least the ones I can buy.

Bottom line? Powerful motor, cuts through anything I can throw at it, but inconvenient for yard clean-up as bag doesn’t bag…

The first reviewer must be inexperienced when using a self propelled lawnmower. The mower IS variable speed and will go as slowly as you want it to. I own this mower and have used many mowers over the past 30 plus years. The speed is controlled by how much you depress/squeeze the bail, which activates the drive system. The bail is like the accelerator on your car or truck. You can press on the gas pedal a little and barely move the vehicle, or you can stomp the pedal and really move on. For the price, this lawnmower can’t be beat.

Keep in mind that this mower is 14″ wide. Which is not much more than one foot wide. So if you have a “real” lawn just imagine how many trips back and forth you will have to do across your lawn. If you live in anything larger than a townhouse this is too small. If you really do not want to purchase a gas or electric mower, look at the larger push mowers (18 or 20in) but not this one.

If you have a small area to mow, this is a great option. I bought this for my 110lb girlfriend who has no trouble pushing this around her tiny fenced in yard which is probably 15ft by 15ft. It is easy to manuever around and only takes a few minutes to mow the grass. She has an electric trimmer which she uses along the fence.

As others have mentioned, it doesn’t cut through twigs and branches very well unless you get some momentum going. And it does tend to leave random blades of grass sticking up that it doesn’t like to cut. These blades are usually longer than the rest of the grass or are a different type of grass. But once you have the lawn a fairly uniform length it does a good job of maintaining it.

So if you have tiny yard, this is a very good choice for you. If you have a medium or large yard, this is not a good choice.

This was one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time. It was easy to put together, just make sure that if you have small hands like me you get someone to really tighten the bolts good though. It’s light, cuts grass like a dream, however it doesn’t edge. Also it’s a nice little workout, and it’s easy to store. I’m diabetic and since using this. I’ve had to lower my insulin intake. So I highly reccomend this to anyone who wants a little cardio workout.

I’ve had this mower since the previous Spring, and every time I’m out mowing, I’m thinking about the review that I planned to write here about it. So needless to say, I’ve thought a lot about this. Here are 6 reasons to get this lawnmower:

1. It’s cheap, about half the price that an equivalent gas mower would set you back. It’s probably also a little bit cheaper to keep running, too.

2. It’s light. A lot of gas mowers are self-propelled because they’re so heavy to push around, but at 36 pounds, this mower doesn’t need to be self-propelled. You can move it back and forth with relative ease, much like a heavy vacuum cleaner.

3. It’s easy to start. No yanking the cord to get it going; just turn it on and start. Of course, you can get self-starting gas mowers these days as well, but they will set you back even more money.

4. It’s quiet. Well, okay, it’s not THAT quiet. But it’s quieter than most.

5. It doesn’t smell. The lawn doesn’t smell like gas fumes after you’re all done.

6. It’s better for the environment. Gas lawnmower engines expel 10 times the amount of pollution per gallon of gas than your automobile does.

Sounds great so far, right? Well, before you click that “Add to Shopping Cart” button, let me give you two thoughts that might have you think otherwise:

1. The cord. Yep, there’s no battery here, so you’re attached to your house’s electricity the entire time. In practice, I haven’t found this too difficult to deal with; by starting near the outlet and snaking back and forth away from it, it’s easy to manage. But, when I have to mow around my trees, it gets to be a bit of a chore. If I had a lot of tricky landscaping, or a particularly large yard, this would be enough to kill the deal.

(You can get electrical mowers with batteries, but they tend to be even more expensive than the gas mowers, and if you’re choosing electric for environmental reasons, the lead in that battery is going to steer you even further away from that option.)

2. The optional mulching bag is small. If I’m collecting my grass clippings, I’ll often need to empty the bag 8-10 times during a typical run. It gets to be pretty annoying. This very basic electric is easy to use and plenty powerful enough for my small lawn. Cord is no problem since my lawn is so small, but if you are doing a lot of back-and-forth you may have to watch out for the cord. No problem to start, which is the major reason why I dumped my gas-powered mower. Appears solid enough for the price. Good Mower!!

I bought this mower when it was at the presale price. Well, I got it sent to my home(Free Shipping was awesome!) and finally got the mower out to use over the weekend! Well, I could not be more pleased! At first turn of the key it started and I was off! It ran smooth and pretty quiet!

I did not use the bag and it mulched the leaves into little pieces! It works really well! I am very happy!

If I could give this mower 10 stars, I would! I’ve used it only once since it was delivered by Amazon in 1st class condition and it’s perfect for my lawn. It started right up and runs like a champ! The automatic choke makes it extremely easy to start as does the electric start. The transmission works perfectly at a moderate walking speed and is easy to control. If you are in the market for a self-propelled mower, buy one that is rear wheel powered-better traction. Lawnboys are great and Amazon has the best price! Shipping is free and it was delivered to me in about 3 days.

9-15-09. After using this mower since April, it has never failed to work properly. I couldn’t be happier! The self-start works every time and the battery stays fully charged for a long time (in fact, I’ve never had to charge it but for the initial charge). This IS the most reliable gas-powered mower I’ve ever owned. A GREAT PRODUCT!

i’ll start from beginning. went to home depot pulled box off rack and 0 bucks later its in my driveway. after opening box it was built in 5 minutes

without any tools. filled crankcase with 20 oz. of included oil and put in some gas and it fired up on first pull. no choke or priming bulb nothing. just pull and it starts. awesome briggs motor. double horsepower of my old craftsman and half the sound. the exhaust pipe actually muffles sound. not like those tuna fish cans on the side of most motors. mower is very light and easily manuverable. just what i wanted. something simple. so it has a few holes on the deck used on the more expensive mower. BIG DEAL! it just means to me i got the same quality steel deck the better model gets.doesn’t have any bells and whistles i don’t need and without 0 price tag. cut so cleanly and evenly. sucked up all clippings. like a vacuum for my lawn. even some twigs i thought were just going flung off to the side were sucked up and munched into the bag. the chubby wheels floated over grass and i was done in a snap. wished i had more lawn.the clipping bag comes off easily and empties without making a mess. plus its a cool kawasaki ninja green! so happy i didn’t spend so much more on the flashy honda. it just looks and feels like quality. highly recommended to my jealous neighbor. to you too

I like this no-frills mower. I’ll go along with the other two positive reviews and note that this is one of Consumer Reports top rated push mowers.

Pros-

- Jointless, one-piece handle. Past push mowers have screws halfway up that loosen and make the mower harder to maneuver. The one piece handle makes this nice.

- two pull start guarantee, or they say they’ll fix it.

- Briggs and Stratton engine.

Cons-

- Jointless handle really transmits vibration. I’d buy the “Good Vibrations” anti-vibration grip. Your hands may not tingle as much.

Also note the complaint that there is no side discharge, there’s a card to get one if you want it. Also, the complaint that there are extra holes in the deck… just means it’s the same deck that they use for their better models; big deal, it’s painted.
