Simple, sensible, and easy to use, Food Rules is a set of memorable rules for eating wisely, many drawn from a variety of ethnic or cultural traditions. Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual Reviews

It is amazing how complicated we have allowed our diets, and our understanding of our diets, to become. Even Pollan’s most recent book In Defense of Food: An Eaters Manifesto – which seemed to be a pretty simple premise – ended up being a (wonderfully) complicated journey through our food system. So when I read that this book was coming out, I wondered if it was necessary given the wealth of information already covered. The answer is: yes, this book is necessary.
While there are a million other guides to a healthy diet running around out there, few manage to boil down the essentials in such a usable way. Pollan takes the essential and fascinating information that he wrote about in his previous book and simmers it down into a succinct (the book is basically 70 half pages long) “manual” of rules for eating. While this book retains some of the bones of its predecessor, it is by no means a Cliff’s Notes version. This manual is essential reading all on its own.
Food Rules is broken down into 3 sections (and this will sound familiar to those that read In Defense of Food): 1- What should I eat? (Eat food) 2 – What kind of food should I eat? (Mostly plants) and 3 – How should I eat? (Not too much). Each section includes 20 or so rules that you can pick and choose from in order to eat a healthy diet. Some of the rules overlap (Avoid food products that contain ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce and Avoid ingredients that no ordinary human would keep in the pantry, for instance) and some seem like such common sense that it is almost laughable to include them, but that is why this manual is so important. It distills all of this complex information that we see and hear every day and turns it into something relatable. We know, somewhere in our minds, that certain grains and oils are better than others. Pollan gives us an easy rule to help know which ones are best. We know that most breakfast cereals are little more than desserts and Pollan gives us an easy rule to know which ones are safe. Some rules are humorous (it’s not food if it arrived through the window of your car) and some are serious; some rules are easy and others require a bit more dedication. But what this manual has is a wide range of useful tips that can be applied to any life at any time. This is no complicated diet; this is a little pocket book of sensible, realistic rules to help you eat your best.

I picked up Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, because I have been searching for just this type of book for many of my clients as a New Year’s gift. I read the slim book quickly in a bookstore and it is the perfect present for my clients who are not eating healthy diets (but who have confessed they wish to.)
I am an interior designer/organizer and see how my clients eat all the time when I redesign and organize their kitchens. Pollan’s In Defense of Food and The Omnivore’s Dilemma are both excellent, but can be intimidating. Not Food Rules–it is short and easy to understand.
The book is divided into three parts and has 64 chapters or rules. The following will give you an good idea of what the book is about: Part I, What should I eat? Includes such chapters as “Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food”, “avoid food products that contain more than five ingredients”, and “avoid foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup”.
Part II, What kind of food should I eat? Includes “Eat mostly plants, especially leaves”, “eat your colors”, and “the whiter the bread, the sooner you will be dead.”
Part III, How should I eat? Includes “pay more, eat less,” “eat less,” and “limit your snacks to unprocessed plant food.”
For those of you who desire a healthier diet, Food Rules is a terrific guide that makes understanding what to put into your body simple to understand and implement.
Finally, if healthy eating is a new concept for you, you will find the clever chapter titles easy to memorize, thus making the concept of healthy eating a simple one to learn.
Highly recommend.

Fancy Feast Gourmet Cat Food, 3-Flavor Seafood Variety Pack, 3-Ounce Cans (Pack of 24) Reviews

This is a direct response to the misleading, non-sensical review that starts with the headline: “No Bargain”:
First off, the “No Bargain” review is EXTREMELY MISLEADING.
Here’s the two things the reviewer got right: 1) If you DO have the Fancy Feast cases delivered regularly via Amazon’s “Subscribe & Save”– you pay .02 a case. 2) If you buy 24 cans at Petsmart (at 53 cents per can) you pay .72 for a case.
BUT HERE’S WHERE THEIR THEORY IMPLODES:
If you buy your case at Petsmart (in CA– specifically in Los Angeles where I live)– YOU HAVE TO PAY SALES TAX… Adding as much as .24 to the total cost of a case.
Now the Petsmart case costs .96. Since we’ve agreed that the Amazon case purchased via Amazon’s “Subscribe & Save” costs .02… That means there is only a SIX CENT DIFFERENCE PER CASE between Amazon’s price and California Petsmart and Walmart prices.
Plus, you also have to PAY FOR GAS if you go to Petsmart or Walmart. Plus, the extra travel time to and fro. Plus, you have to drag all that cat food to your car from the store and then drag it from your car to your house.
MY Amazon Fancy Feast is DELIVERED TO MY FRONT DOOR BY A UPS DELIVERY PERSON.
I’ll gladly pay a EXTRA SIX CENTS for DELIVERY TO MY DOOR.
If folks follow your thinking– they’ll spend A LOT MORE MONEY for their cat food!
Think it through! Fancy Feast is a PERFECTLY FINE DEAL HERE!

As another reviewer said, these are pulverized in our house. Once the can is opened, somehow that aroma waifs through the air on the back of a gnat and they’re by my side in 1/2 a millisecond! My only suggestion is that if you have a cat that doesn’t like pates, be careful on these grilled varieties. They’re supposed to all be shredded but they do have a couple that are actually pates and well, up went the nose on those! I pay about six dollars less for this loaf pack at my local grocery, so keep that in mind with the pricetag. I think it’s high. Other than that, highly recommend!

50′s Decade Box Gift Basket – Classic 50′s Candy Reviews

Hometown Favorites is NOT a favorite of mine, and I will never buy from them again. This product is not worth .95 plus .10 shipping & handling. There were 7 candies missing with only 1 substitution. The company, Hometown Favorites, reserved the right to substitute, but they didn’t deliver. It arrives in a no frills box with no filler of any kind inside to make it presentable. My event is in a few days, so I will re-package it myself. One of the other reviewers said that she tried to contact them and they never responded. I won’t waste my time. 50′s Decade Box Gift Basket – Classic 50′s Candy

I ordered the 50′s Gift Basket for my parents. I ordered it a couple of weeks before Christmas and the package did arrive. However, when I asked my Mom how she liked it, she told me that there were a few items missing. The packing slip had listed what all should be in there, and the following were NOT there: charms assorted squares, smoothie peanut butter cup, cherry mash, chocolate cigarettes, walnettos.
I sent an email to Hometown Favorites on 12/17/07 telling them that these items were missing and requested they satisfy my order. As of today, 1/2/08 I have not heard back from them.
Needless to say, I will NOT purchase anything further from their company…and would suggest you do the same!

General Foods International Sugar Free Chai Latte Drink Mix, 4.4-Ounce Tins (Pack of 6) Reviews

I’m on a special diet that I have to count carbs, and this low carb latte taste great! I’ve tryed other diet latte’s that still have way to much carbs and sugar. What I would of liked to see before I bought this product was it’s nutrition facts. I had to research the product to find out about it’s nutrition. If your wondering, 30 calories, 2g fat, 35mg sodium, 2g carbs, 0g sugar. You can’t beat that! Oh, also I contacted General Foods International cause I needed to know the caffeine content. Chai Latte contains 10-15mg of caffeine per serving.

I resorted to buying my GF International Coffee Chai & Mocha from Amazon when my local supermarkets (four different corporations !!) all simultaneously stopped carrying SUGAR FREE Chai and Mocha in their stores. Frankly, I’m paying less per can thru Amazon, but only because I’m getting Free Delivery deals. I might start to order more food products this way. Gas is almost a gallon, and I want to avoid as many trips as possible.

In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto
The companion volume to The New York Times bestseller The Omnivore’s Dilemma
Michael Pollan’s lastbook , The Omnivore’s Dilemma, launched a national conversation about the American way of eating; now In Defense of Food shows us how to change it, one meal at a time. Pollan proposes a new answer to the question of what we should eat that comes down to seven simple but liberating words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. Pollan’s bracing and eloquent manifesto shows us how we can start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives, enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy, and bring pleasure back to eating.Amazon Significant Seven, January 2008: Food is the one thing that Americans hate to love and, as it turns out, love to hate. What we want to eat has been ousted by the notion of what we should eat, and it’s at this nexus of hunger and hang-up that Michael Pollan poses his most salient question: where is the food in our food? What follows in In Defense of Food is a series of wonderfully clear and thoughtful answers that help us omnivores navigate the nutritional minefield that’s come to typify our food culture. Many processed foods vie for a spot in our grocery baskets, claiming to lower cholesterol, weight, glucose levels, you name it. Yet Pollan shows that these convenient “healthy” alternatives to whole foods are appallingly inconvenient: our health has a nation has only deteriorated since we started exiling carbs, fats–even fruits–from our daily meals. His razor-sharp analysis of the American diet (as well as its architects and its detractors) offers an inspiring glimpse of what it would be like if we could (a la Humpty Dumpty) put our food back together again and reconsider what it means to
